Carbon components for the automotive industry place high demands on surface preparation. Before painting, they must be sanded evenly and reproducibly. At Rathmayr GmbH, this task is performed by an automated sanding cell from ASIS.
The turnkey stand-alone system combines a FANUC industrial robot with sanding technology, automated abrasive changing, dust extraction, and complete control and safety technology.
The components are processed using the Rob-E-Unit, an electric random orbital sander designed for continuous industrial operation. Controlled speed and an active contact flange support the uniform processing of three-dimensional carbon components. This creates a reproducibly prepared surface before painting and provides the basis for consistently high Class-A quality.
The sanding discs are also changed automatically. Two X-Change abrasive changing stations remove the used abrasive. The robot then independently picks up a new sanding disc from the magazine.
The magazine holds up to 400 abrasives. A new sanding disc is picked up in less than 15 seconds, enabling largely autonomous system operation.
