In the automotive coating process, openings in the vehicle body must be reliably sealed to ensure corrosion protection. While this work was previously often done manually by inserting rubber plugs, ASIS is relying on an automated solution using adhesive pads for this project.
For the mass production of a well-known sports car manufacturer, a comprehensive pilot setup was implemented at the ASIS production facility. The goal was to validate the new technology under realistic conditions and optimally prepare it for future use on the production line.
In the system, four robots seal the openings of various car bodies with precision and in short cycle times. The adhesive pads are applied using special applicators. Switching to a different pad size occurs automatically by replacing the entire applicator. Refilling the pads is also designed for user safety and can be performed from outside the system via a swivel mechanism.
The project demonstrates how ASIS makes new process technologies suitable for industrial use—from validation in the pre-development phase through to integration into series production.
