FPX for BMW

Automated Surface Evaluation Using Robot-Assisted Measurement Technology

ASIS developed a fully automated measurement system for BMW to precisely evaluate painted and wrapped surfaces. At the time of implementation, the system was known internally at BMW as PromOS. Today, the solution is known at ASIS as FPX – Fingerprint Expert.

The system automates a complex measurement process that is crucial for the objective evaluation of surface quality. Test cards are automatically retrieved from a magazine, securely held in place, and analyzed using various measuring devices. Relevant parameters such as color, texture, film thickness, and cloudiness are recorded in a reproducible manner.

A robot handles the precise positioning of the measuring instruments and ensures consistent measurement conditions. The vacuum clamping of the test panels and automatic program recognition via barcode enable a stable, efficient, and reliable process.

In coating technology in particular, the interplay between material, application, and process control is crucial. The FPX system allows these factors to be systematically evaluated and documented. This creates a solid foundation for quality assurance and the optimization of coating processes.

The project demonstrates how ASIS combines robotics, measurement technology, and process expertise to create an automated solution—delivering objective measurement results, high repeatability, and greater process reliability in surface technology.
